Motherhood & Birthdays

Happy Birthday to my now 14-year-old only child son. A loaded statement for sure. But let's talk about the fact that he aging way too quickly. My theory is that children should only grow a year, every two years. He would only be seven now and that would be just about right for me. Of course I think that he is the next best thing to peanut butter.

It began with a small gift in the morning, a Hover Ball and a big bag of Tootsie Rolls. Once he opened the Hover Ball and we gave it a few kicks, we realized that our two dogs thought it was their birthday gift. The small dog picked it right up with his teeth and ran behind the nearest end table. We wrangled it away from him to find that the Hover Ball now has little holes poked into the top.

Normally I pick out the birthday card weeks ahead of time, but with a new job and new medicines, I
have been self-centered and forgot. Thankfully Dad brought it up the night before so that we could race to our local CVS to pick one up, under the guise of going to get my new medicine. We approached the card aisle a bit leery of what we could find for a teenage boy. I of course found one that would be more specifically from my, something about wishing my favorite person a happy birthday. Dad though continued to comb through the neatly stacked piles until he found one from both of us. A funny fold out one that talked about all of the things we would have missed without him. Good job Dad.

After school was the real mission. Our only child, yes that means spoiled much of the time, wanted an Iphone 6. Let's begin with the fact that we three have Verizon Pre-pay plans. We each pay $48.72 which includes taxes and we get unlimited calls and text and 1 GB of data. My deal with him (which is what we did) was that I would pay the $200 for the phone and $50 a month for his contract anything above that he had to pay. Gladly he agreed. Off we went to the Verizon store where they tried to tempt us with the IPhone 5 for only $10. Sorry guys but it's this boys birthday and he wants the 6. An hour later he's a very very happy boy.

The night doesn't end there though because he now needs a case. Selections were few! We went to our Wal-Mart, to our neighboring town's Wal-Mart, and finally at the neighboring town's Verizon store we actually found a few decent ones, an Otterbox to be exact. $40 more and we are on our way. After all of the running he (thankfully) decided that we could go through the drive-thru at Freddy's and pick-up supper instead of a long drawn out sit down meal.

Next comes the party. We give him the choice each year of having a big party with all of his friends invited or to go somewhere for the weekend. He chose to go to Caribbean Cove with one of his best friends this weekend. Sounds good to, I'll just relax in the hot tubs.
