My son is old enough to stop watching cartoon, but I am not. At
what age will I again turn
the channel to something other than the Looney
Tunes? Maybe watch a soap opera, Jerry Springer, or Rachel Ray and Ellen. My
mother no longer watches cartoons, but I don't remember when she stopped, I
need to ask her.
My background noise during the hours 8:00
am to 6:00 pm comes from cartoons. I don't really watch them, but I listen to
them, I know every word by heart it seems. Is this conventional or not? Does
every one do this? Your child outgrows them, but you've become so ingrained to
turn it to the kids' networks, that it happens automatically and anything else
sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard.
I'm not immature as most people might like to believe. Instead
cartoons help relieve the everyday stresses of life. Drama doesn't reside in
cartoonville. Reminders of things left undone, say the laundry, the dishes, the
sweeping and mopping, calling the phone company, scheduling a meeting with the
accountant, taking medications, etc... do not pop up during cartoons. In other words my
obligations don't constantly bang around in my head and instead stay where they
belong which is on my "to do" list.
Wishful thinking becomes purely about imagination, like I wish I
had Ninja skills like the Turtles or a dog for a partner in fighting crime like
on T.U.F.F. Puppy. No dreams of a shiny new car. No desires to throw away all
of my clothes and buy a whole wardrobe from scratch. Satisfaction sits happily
in my heart.
And another thing, no one ever really gets hurt or dies a tragic
death in cartoonland. Jimmy and Fairy World live to see another day, or 15
minutes. It is attractive to be in a simple fun place for a while. You could
even say they make me feel nostalgic by taking me back to not only my son's
childhood, but mine as well.
The only negative that I can find is that I
miss a few cartoons such as Kim Possible and The Emperor's New Groove. I think
I recognized Kim's voice on a different cartoon the other day and Kronk's voice
pops up a lot. I'll take that.
